In keeping with its mission of bringing computing to the young, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has released a beta version of a web-based software code editor for kids.

“We are building a new online text-based Code Editor to help young people aged 7 and older learn to write code,” Raspberry Pi’s Phil Howell writes. “It’s free and designed for young people who attend Code Clubs and CoderDojos, students in schools, and learners at home.”

The initial release of this code editor supports Python, and users can save their code to their Raspberry Pi Foundation account so that they can access their projects on both home- and classroom-based devices. Support for web development languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) is coming to the Editor “in the near future,” the Foundation notes. The editor will be open-sourced in the future and it will also be updated with project-sharing and collaboration features that comply with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office’s (ICO’s) age-appropriate design code and the Foundation’s safeguarding policies.

The editor is designed to work well on mobile and tablet devices, and low-cost computers like the Raspberry Pi 4 2GB. Anyone interested in testing it now can access the first two projects in the Foundation’s Intro to Python path. You can also access the editor directly at editor.raspberrypi.org.
