Apple offers full refund over early return of developer Macs

Posted February 8, 2021 | Mac

Last week, Apple instructed developers to return the special Mac mini units they had rented in order to develop software adapted for the company’s new proprietary processors. The units were equipped with Apple Silicon chips – an A12Z to be precise – months before they became commercially available.

This was an earlier return than originally planned, and there was some pushback to the decision; many developers reacted angrily when it became clear that they would only get back $200 out of the $500 it cost to rent the computers. But Apple has now chosen to increase the compensation to $500, effectively a full refund – although the money is returned as a company credit rather than cash.

According to an email to developers posted by MacRumors, Apple says it has listened to the criticism and wants to show developers its appreciation by increasing the compensation.

Another criticism Apple faced was that the credit had to be used by May. Developers now have until the end of 2021 to use the larger credit, which can be spent on any Apple product.
