Samsung did smart in sending a few preview Galaxy Fold units to assorted YouTubers and “influencers.” Not only did some of them try to peel off the top transparent polyimide layer thinking it’s a screen protector, but also issues with crease gaps and hinge debris were identified so that the launch could be postponed until these kinks are ironed out.

They tried and failed to replicate the issues from the initial batch, and a source from that group tipped that:

Samsung reportedly extended the top layer to wrap around the corners so that it looks more like the integral part of the display that it is, and foolproofed the gap between the hinge elements and the crease in the middle, along with some other durability enhancements. 

Given that Huawei was gunning for a July release of the Mate X, the Galaxy Fold may have its re-release announced very soon, but whether or not it will coincide with the Note 10 launch, remains to be seen. 

“Releasing the world’s first mass produced foldable smartphone faster than Huawei may be a bigger deal than losing customers,” said one industry insider in Korea, and we wholeheartedly agree.
