Sony Sold 2.4 Million PS5 Consoles, Closed Bungie Acquisition

Posted July 29, 2022 | Bungie | Games | Playstation | PlayStation 5 | Sony | Windows

As part of its quarterly financial results, Sony announced that it sold 2.4 million PlayStation 5 video game consoles in the second quarter. It had sold 2.3 million units in the same quarter one year earlier. Sony also closed its acquisition of Bungie.

“More people are going out due to a decline in COVID infections in key markets, which has led to a slowdown in the growth of the overall gaming market,” Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki said, explaining why Sony expects the current quarter and fiscal year to be a bit soft. As a result, Sony lowered its financial forecasts for gaming by 16 percent.

Sony reported $4.5 billion in revenues from PlayStation, a decline of 2 percent year-over-year. Software sales were also poor, at 47.1 million units sold, a YOY decline of 26 percent. The PlayStation Plus subscriber base grew 2 percent to 47.3 million players, but monthly active users were down 3 percent to 102 million.

Microsoft has never revealed how many Xbox Series X|S consoles it has sold. But during its own financial earnings conference call, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella boasted that his firm sold more next-generation consoles in the previous three sequential quarters in North America than Sony.

Sony also announced that it has closed its $3.6 billion acquisition of game studio Bungie, the original creators of the Halo and Destiny franchises. The transaction was concluded much earlier than expected.

“We have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie’s heart,” a Bungie statement reads. “Together, we share a dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families across generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.”

Bungie will remain independent from PlayStation and will continue to independently develop and publish its games.
