Microsoft last night issued Windows 10 build 19023 (20H1) to Insiders in the Fast ring. As usual, there are no new features. That said, Microsoft is experimenting with a new way of delivering optional driver installs via Windows Update.

“We’re continuing to look at ways we can improve the update experience on Windows 10 PCs for our customers,” the firm explains. “As part of this effort, we are conducting an experiment related to how we deliver driver updates through Windows Update. During this experiment, drivers categorized as ‘optional’ will not be automatically downloaded and installed on Windows Insider’s PCs running 20H1 Build 18980 and newer.”

During this experiment, Insiders running newer 20H1 builds can navigate to Settings > Windows Update > Optional Updates and manually download drivers. Microsoft says that this experiment will run through November 25.

And that’s about it. The mystery around Windows 10 version 20H1’s one-year development time remains firmly in place.
