Microsoft Announces the October 2019 Xbox Update

Posted October 8, 2019 | Windows | Xbox One

Microsoft announced today that the October 2019 Xbox Update is now available on Xbox One consoles.

“The October 2019 Xbox One Update begins rolling out to everyone today,” Microsoft’s Jason Ronald announced. “This month’s update unveils new Family Settings options to balance your family’s screen time, Wish List notifications, improvements to the Mixer viewing experience on Xbox One, the ability to refer Xbox Game Pass titles to friends, and even more improvements based on your feedback.”

Here’s what’s new.

Family Settings improvements. With the October 2019 Xbox Update, parents get more control over what their children see and interact with on the console thanks to two new key elements to screen time:  Parents can now set how much time their children spend within specific apps or games in addition to the total time spent on a device. And now Family Settings you set will apply across Windows PCs and Xbox One. You can learn more here.

Wish List notifications. Now, you’ll see notifications to alert you when an item in your Wish List has a price discount.

Mixer improvements. Microsoft has built a full Mixer viewing experience right into the Xbox dashboard, so viewers will no longer have to navigate to a separate app to enjoy Mixer streams.

Xbox Game Pass title recommendations. You can now recommend a game from Xbox Game Pass for Console via a message, your activity feed, or a club.

Recent Players improvements. The Recent Players experience is now more reliable and lets you to connect with the gamers you play with instantly. “You can now more quickly and easily engage with your Recent Players, whether you are sending a message, inviting players to a party, or adding them to your Friends List,” Microsoft notes. You can also more easily report them for the terrible Gamertags that are still all too common on Xbox these days.

Game update improvements. Microsoft made improvements to automatic game updates, significantly reducing the time you need to wait when launching an updated title.

Events app. A new Events app will be installed on consoles later this month. This app helps gamers discover and be reminded about events that are happening within their favorite games or gaming communities, like the start of a new season or an in-game holiday event. Microsoft promises more information about this app soon.

Capture Settings improvements and Capture & Share experiment. There are now more options in the “Allow game captures” setting. You can choose between “Captures by me,” “Captures by me or games,” or “Don’t capture.” Additionally, there is a new experimental update called “Capture & Share” that will only be provided to a “limited portion of the Xbox One audience to gauge interest and collect feedback.” Sigh. Yep, they’re doing A/B testing in production code now.
