Lenovo Launches Next-gen ThinkPad Laptops With Lighter Design, Upgraded Internals

At CES 2019 today, Lenovo is launching a range of new ThinkPad products. The company’s ThinkPad line for its business customers is getting two new laptops, two new monitors, and some other accessories.

The highlight of Lenovo’s new ThinkPad lineup for 2019 is the new ThinkPad X1 Carbon and the X1 Yoga. Here’s what’s new:

The 7th gen ThinkPad X1 carbon comes with a new woven carbon fiber weave finish that’s meant to highlight the strength of the device’s build. The improved design of the device is thinner than the previous generation, coming in at only 14.55 thickness. The device is lighter than before, too, weighing at 1.1kg.

On the inside, Lenovo has upgraded the device with new Intel 8th gen Core processors, a new Dolby Atmos four-speaker sound system for more immersive sound quality, four far field mics for Cortana and Alexa, and a webcam cover for the regular, RGB camera and IR camera. The device now comes with new display options — available with a 4K Dolby Vision HRD panel, or a regular FHD display. The device is available with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 2TB of PCIe SSD for storage. With all that on the inside, Lenovo promises to offer up to 15 hours of battery life on the ThinkPad X1. It will be available in June, starting at $1709.

And then there’s the new ThinkPad X1 Yoga, now at its 4th generation. The 2-in-1 ThinkPad device now comes in a new precision-machined aluminium, iron-grey chassis that has been engineered to be as strong as the old carbon fiber chassis. The device’s footprint has been reduced by around 16% with the new design, and it’s a whopping 11% thinner than the previous generation at 15.2mm, weighing just around 1.3kg.

The upgraded X1 Yoga also introduces support for Lenovo’s ThinkPad Mechanical Dock. On the inside, Lenovo has upgraded the internals with new 8th gen Intel Core processors. The device comes with up to 8GB of RAM, up to 2TB of PCIe storage, promises to offer up to 15hrs of battery life. Available this June, prices start at $1929.

Lenovo is also introducing the new $1299 43.4-inch ThinkVision P44W business monitor, a $249.99 360-degree camera for video conferencing, a $149.99 “ultraportable” bluetooth speaker, and a new $79.99 USB-C Travel Hub today.
