Huawei teases Mate 30 Pro, reveals larger camera sensor, low-light improvements

Posted September 9, 2019 | Mobile | News

The Huawei Mate 30 series will be officially unveiled in just 10 days at an event in Munich, Germany, and while we don’t yet even know whether the phone will have Google apps on board, the company has just given us a big tease as to what the Mate 30 Pro will focus on.

And the keywords are definitely: a much better camera, faster performance and better connectivity.

The 30-second teaser has the following slogans:
  1. Look beyond the light (hints at better camera low-light performance)
  2. Go fast go large (hints at a larger camera sensor)
  3. See time differently (hints at improved slow motion mode)
  4. Power through speed (hints at better performance)
  5. Rethink charging (faster charging, duh!)
  6. Rethink speed (faster performance, duh!)
  7. Rethink connectivity (probably a teaser for 5G connectivity, let’s remind you that the Kirin 990 is the world’s first SoC with built-in 5G modem)
  8. Rethink darkness (again, teasing better camera low-light performance)
  9. Rethink possibilities (overall slogan for the Mate 30)

What does this teaser reveal?

As you can see, the majority of the slogans are around an improved camera and this is just what the rumors have been saying all along. We are particularly thrilled with the possibility to see finally a much larger physical sensor on the Mate 30. Despite all the advancements in computational photography, a larger pixel that comes with a larger camera sensor is still the easiest and most efficient way to boost camera quality.

The rest of the teasers around speed, performance and connectivity have a lot to do with the recently unveiled Kirin 990 chip, a piece of silicon engineered by Huawei and promising to give the Snapdragon 855 a run for its money.

The big question around the Huawei Mate 30 series, however, remains around Android. Huawei has fallen prey to a US-China trade war of massive proportions. Huawei is now a part of the US Entity List, a list of companies that US business can’t do business with. Google as an Android maker and a bunch of other companies making chips are thus currently forbidden from providing their products to Huawei. If Huawei has not negotiated some special waiver, law would require the company to have the Mate 30 Pro running the open source version of Android without any Google apps on board. The Chinese company has also been developing its own operating system, but at this point in time it’s hard to see any newcomer OS taking over the duopoly of iOS-Android.

In either case, we will know all about the Huawei Mate 30 series when the company lifts the veil of secrecy on September 19th in Munich, Germany. We will be there covering the launch live and giving you a first look at the new devices, so stay tuned.
