HBO Max is Coming to Roku

Posted December 16, 2020 | HBO Max | Music + Videos | Roku | Windows

After months of negotiations, AT&T and Roku today reached an agreement to bring HBO Max to the latter’s video streaming devices. It arrives tomorrow, Thursday, December 17.

“We believe that all entertainment will be streamed and we are thrilled to partner with HBO Max to bring their incredible library of iconic entertainment brands and blockbuster slate of direct to streaming theatrical releases to … Roku,” Roku senior vice president Scott Rosenberg said in a statement. “With more than 100 million [users and over 46 million accounts], Roku [is] the number one TV streaming platform in America.”

Landing HBO Max on Roku is indeed a big deal and it effectively doubles the addressable market for the service, at least on video streaming devices. HBO Max has over 12 million subscribers, and with this deal, it is now on every major streaming endpoint, including Apple TV, iOS/iPad OS, Android, Chromecast, PC/Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, and Samsung smart TVs in addition to Fire TV and Roku.

This news comes one month after AT&T announced that HBO Max was coming to Amazon’s Fire TV devices, and one week before the blockbuster-to-be “Wonder Woman 1984” debuts on HBO Max alongside its theatrical debut. Next year, Warner Bros. will co-launch all of its major theatrical releases on HBO Max as well.
