Google/Nest Wifi is Moving to the Google Home App

Posted April 2, 2021 | Android | Cloud | Google | Google Wifi | iOS | Nest WiFi | smart home | Windows

Google notified customers of its Google Wifi and Nest Wifi systems that it is moving management of these products to the Google Home app. To date, users have managed them with a dedicated Google Wifi app.

“To help our customers control and manage all their connected products in one place and enable routines across them, we’re moving the control of Google Wifi devices to the Google Home app,” an email from Google reads. “You can easily migrate your Google Wifi network into the Google Home app, where you’ll be able to control your Wi-Fi network.”

Google says that when you migrate, you can take advantage of new features like improved video conferencing on Google Meet and Zoom, better network insights and troubleshooting, and better Google Assistant integration.

But it’s not like you have a choice: Starting May 25, users will only be able to add new devices or modify, expand, or create networks in the Google Home app, and not with the Google Wifi app. And starting in June, it will end support for the Google Wifi app and stop offering it in the Google Play Store.

To migrate your network from Google/Nest Wifi to the Google Home app, open the Google Home app on Android or iOS, tap the plus (“+”) icon in the top left, and select Import Google Wifi network. If you don’t see that option, you may need to wait for an app update.
