Google Chrome’s Memory Saver and Energy Saver Modes Are Now Rolling Out

Posted February 21, 2023 | Cloud | Google Chrome | Web browsers | Windows

Google’s Chrome browser should now make better use of your device’s battery and memory. The new Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes, which Google started rolling out on Chrome 108 back in December should now be enabled by default on Chrome 110 according to Android Police.

Memory Saver can free up memory on your device by putting inactive tabs to sleep, similar to Microsoft Edge’s Sleeping tabs feature. The Energy Saver feature, however, will limit background activity and visual effects for websites when your laptop’s battery drops below 20%.

According to Google, these two new performance settings can lead to Chrome using up to 40% and 10GB less memory on Windows PCs, Macs, and Chromebooks. Google Chrome also provides granular controls over which sites will be exempted from these two new performance settings.

Google Chrome may still be the most popular web browser by a pretty wide margin, the app is also well known for being quite taxing on resources. Performance is probably one area where Microsoft’s Edge browser has been noticeably better, though that may not be for much longer.

If you’re not seeing these new Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes in Chrome 110 yet, you can enable them manually from the chrome://flags menu. Let us know in the comments if you notice any difference after testing these two new performance settings.
