Facebook Gets Built-in Quiet Mode to Prevent Distractions

Posted April 10, 2020 | Digital Health | Do not disturb | Facebook | Social | Windows

Facebook is adding a new feature to its app to help users disable distractions on the app. The new feature, dubbed Quiet Mode, allows users to mute “most” of the app’s push notifications for a certain period every day.

Quiet Mode for Facebook builds on the company’s Your Time on Facebook feature, which lets users track their Facebook usage. The new update also introduces some updates to the Your Time on Facebook feature, connecting it to the new Quiet Mode feature.

“As we all adjust to new routines and staying home, setting boundaries for how you spend your time online can be helpful,” Facebook said in a blog post. “Whether it’s to help you focus on your family and friends, sleep without distraction or manage how you spend your time at home, we have tools that can help you find the right balance for how you use Facebook,” the company added.

Quiet Mode can be enabled on-demand, or you can schedule it to be enabled during a certain period of the day. Aside from muting push notifications, the new feature will also prevent you from using the Facebook app when it’s enabled. You can, of course, disable the Quiet Mode feature when it’s enabled if you really want to get back into the app.

Quiet Mode on Facebook is a nice little addition, but both Android and iOS have similar features already. On iPhones, for example, Apple’s Screen Time feature does exactly what Quiet Mode promises. So in a way, the feature is quite redundant.
