European Commission is Banning TikTok on Work Devices

Posted February 23, 2023 | Cloud | European Commission | Security | Social | TikTok | Windows

The European Commission has asked all of its employees to uninstall TikTok from all work devices. In an email to EU officials obtained by Euractiv, the EU executive’s IT service cited data security concerns as the main reason for banning TikTok from corporate devices.

“To protect the Commission’s data and increase its cybersecurity, the European Commission Corporate Management Board has decided to suspend the TikTok application on corporate devices and personal devices enrolled in the Commission mobile device services,” the email seen by Euractiv. said

The European Commission gave employees a March 15 deadline for getting rid of TikTok on their mobile devices, and that includes personal devices where corporate apps are installed. If they fail to comply with the new rules by March 15, employees will lose access to their work email and apps like Skype for Business.

TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company Bytedance, has become a growing source of concern for governments after Bytedance admitted that some of its employees had used the app to track some journalists investigating the company. In the US, the Government recently banned TikTok on government-issued devices over security concerns, though a full-on TikTok ban in the country isn’t in the cards yet.
