Back in February of this year, Disney announced it had more than 26 million paid subscribers for Disney+. This week, the company is announcing a new milestone for its video streaming service: 50 million.

Disney+ now has 50 million paid subscribers worldwide, just five months after the service first launched in the United States. The recent boost in Disney+’s growth is fueled by its expansion to new countries.

Disney+, as you may remember, expanded to a total of eight new countries in Western Europe in the past two weeks. The service also launched in India last week, which has caused a massive increase in subscriber numbers — with Disney+’s Indian subscriber base accounting for 8 million of its 50 million paid subscribers.

“We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year,” said Kevin Mayer, Chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International, teasing the service’s upcoming expansion to Japan and Latin America for later this year.

Disney+’s quick growth has surprised everyone, including Disney itself. The company had originally expected Disney+ to gain around 60 to 90 million subscribers by the end of 2024, but it will more than likely reach that goal by the end of this year. Disney+’s main competitor, Netflix, has around 167 million subscribers worldwide, while Amazon has 150 million Amazon Prime subscribers with access to Prime Video.
