Build 2023: Microsoft 365 Copilot to Get Plugins Support

Posted May 23, 2023 | Build 2023 | ChatGPT | Cloud | Microsoft 365 | Microsoft 365 Copilot | OpenAI | Windows

At its Build developer conference this morning, Microsoft announced that its new Microsoft 365 Copilot is getting support for third-party plugins. Similar to ChatGPT plugins, Microsoft 365 Copilot plugins will allow developers to integrate their apps with Microsoft’s productivity assistant.

The Microsoft 365 Copilot is currently in private preview, and the company launched a paid early access program for it earlier this month. After OpenAI launched the first plugins for ChatGPT in March, Microsoft announced that the two companies are teaming up to create an open standard for plugins that will work across ChatGPT, the Microsoft 365 Copilot, and the upcoming Windows Copilot.

“We are embracing an open standard for plugins that integrates across OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s copilot offerings, including Bing Chat, Dynamics 365 Copilot, Windows Copilot, and Microsoft 365 Copilot,” said Rajesh Jha, EVP of Experiences & Devices at Microsoft. This is a pretty big deal for developers who’ve already been testing the waters with ChatGPT plugins.

Organizations that have joined the Microsoft 365 Copilot Early Access program will soon get access to over 50 plugins from companies like Atlassian and Adobe. In the coming months, the Microsoft 365 Copilot will add support for two new types of plugins, Teams message extensions and Power Platform connectors.

“Thousands of additional line-of-business and third-party plugins will become available in the coming months as we integrate existing Teams message extensions and Power Platform connectors with Microsoft 365 Copilot,” Jha said. “This extensive ecosystem of plugins for Microsoft 365 Copilot surfaced in the tools used every day for work will bring unprecedented value to our mutual customers as we transform how work gets done together.”

Lastly, Microsoft’s Edge browser will also soon integrate with the Microsoft 365 Copilot. This will let Edge users access connected third-party services via either the Microsoft 365 Copilot or Bing chat.
