Apple Hires Senior Netflix Engineer for Apple TV+

Posted January 30, 2020 | Apple | Apple TV | Apple TV+ | Music + Videos | Netflix | Windows

Apple has been investing a ton into its video streaming service, Apple TV+. The company’s $4.99 a month video streaming service undercuts the prices of all the other major players like Netflix and Disney+.

Cupertino has been spending a lot of money on Apple TV+, especially on new original content. But at the same time, Apple has been hiring new talent for the service. The latest to join Apple’s team is Ruslan Meshenberg, who was previously a senior engineer at Netflix.

Ruslan Meshenberg announced his move on Twitter with a picture of Apple’s HQ entrance. Meshenberg joined Netflix back in 2011, and he was responsible for the streaming service’s cloud platform for a good few years. Before Netflix, Meshenberg worked at Yahoo! and HP.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that Meshenberg is joining Apple’s internet-services organization, with Variety reporting that he is joining Apple’s video streaming team as an engineering leader.

Apple TV+ is yet to have any major technical issues since launch, but my personal experience with the service has been quite problematic. Apple’s TV app on iOS and macOS do not offer a smooth experience, and I have personally encountered several bugs since the service’s launch. The web player is also incredibly behind that of Netflix, specifically in terms of user experience, reliability, and features. So yes, Apple may not have had any major technical issues with Apple TV+ yet, but the company’s service requires a lot of polishing. And maybe, Meshenberg will help fix that.
