Huawei Denies Not Wanting to Return to Using Google Services
Huawei has gone through a lot over the past few months. Following the trade ban from the US government, Huawei was forced to stop doing business with Google, preventing the company from shipping its new phones with Google Play Services.
The ban led to Huawei building its own alternative, but building something that can compete against Google Play Services is a difficult challenge, even for one of the world’s largest smartphone makers.
In a recent interview, however, a Huawei executive commented that the company is not interested in going back to using Google Play Services even if the US trade ban is lifted.
But as it turns out, Huawei is actually still very much interested in using Google services, despite the alleged interest developers have shown on its own solution called Huawei Mobile Services. “Our first choice is the open Android ecosystem, including GMS (Google Mobile Services) — that was what helped us become number two in the world for smartphone shipments,” a Huawei spokesperson told The Verge. The company denied not wanting to go back to using Google services and says it will still be open to using Google Play Services if the trade ban was lifted.
All of this, for now, is practically out of Huawei’s control. With Google not allowed to do business with Huawei because of the trade ban, there is not a lot both the companies can do to get Google Play Services back on Huawei’s smartphones. So, for now, we just have to wait for the US government to lift its ban on Huawei.
